Reading Notes: Tricksters: Tiger, Brahman, and Jackal

Image
First and foremost, I have to say that Tricksters are one of my favorite types of stories; I chose to take notes on The Tiger, The Brahman, and the Jackal for that very reason. This story was interesting because there were two tricksters: the Tiger and the Jackal. Although they play the same roles, they are very different in their behaviors. The Tiger is successful in tricking the Brahman, and because of his success, he becomes confident... a little too confident. What I like about the Jackal is that he acts dumb, even fooling the Brahman, which allows him to out trick the Tiger and makes him feel like the fool. I am sure that I will be using the idea of a trickster in a few of my stories. Another interesting aspect of this story is the setting. There was not much detail, but I could still paint a picture in my head of what the area may have looked like. The use of personification is always nice to come by. I feel like personifying an object, animal, etc., is exciting and fun. To me,

Reading Options

The UnTextbook is a very interesting and unique idea. I feel like I have gone through all of my academic years always being so worried about plagiarizing, yet this class finally gives an opportunity to re-create stories without being worried about reproducing them. This is so exciting! My aunt, mother, and brother will love to hear about all these stories, and then read my re-creations! Exploring the UnTextbook I ran across a lot of stories that I would like to read and re-write. The three stories I chose today were  Beowulf,  The Life of Buddha , and  the Brothers Grimm (Ashliman) . I chose Beowulf because it is one of my favorite stories. I know that most have probably heard of it, if not read it, and if not, I hope that someone stumbles across my post and feels inspired to read it. The next choice I picked because I am interested in Buddha and I have not taken the initiative to actually read anything about him. Interestingly, I actually found a book on Buddha, however, I never ope

Time Strategies

The schedule I set out for myself is to work a couple of hours every other day. I think I will like this schedule, but I have not had the chance to implement it yet. I picked Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to do my assignments, which still leaves me some time to complete assignments if something comes up. I do not imagine myself changing my schedule, but I like knowing that I can if I need to. One of the time management tips that I know would be helpful for me is listed as number five on the  Time Management Tips Just For Creatives  webpage. The tip is to "Take Purposeful Breaks." This will be helpful to me because I typically sit and work until I am finished with an assignment, and then I get burned out really quickly, which leads to me scrolling through YouTube or watching a movie/TV show. I have been meaning to actually use the weights I have sitting in my living room so this will give me an excuse to take a break and workout. The other time management article that I rea

Technology

I am not very tech savvy, but I have always enjoyed my computer classes. I have never had a blog before, so I was a little intimidated at first, but I have come to understand it better. I found it especially fun designing my blog page. There are so many options to choose from. I have also never created a website, so that will be fun to explore. One of the technology tools that I am familiar with is bookmarking... so, I have a lot to learn. I think it will be fun to figure out the image editing and graphics creation. I like this class because we will always be able to access the information in the future. The use of a class wiki page and announcements blog is genius. I find it really easy to navigate, which is important because there is a lot of information to get through each week. I also like the fact that we can access our readings online! I am sure that I am not the only one who appreciates one less book to buy. *my reaction when I am faced with technology Confused guy. So

Assignments... More like fun activities!

My overall impression of this class started a year ago when two of my friends, who were taking this course, told me about it. I specifically choose this class based off of their recommendation and I truly love mythology and folklore. I have always found these topics interesting. When I was younger, my aunt used to tell me stories and she would come up with some of the most creative fair tales, right off the top of her head! I found that it was impressive and she is a big reason I have a creative streak in me. As far as coursework, I am excited to do some of these readings. I am not that great of a reader, so it is always nice to work on that. I have a Mythology book at home and it would be interesting to crack that back open and use it for some assignments if the schedule permits. I am curious to read other's blog posts, I always find reading other's ideas interesting. Especially in this class because the format is based on creativity. I really enjoyed the storybooks and thin

Growth Mindset

Image
Carol Dweck compared children with a "Growth Mindset" and children with a "Fixed Mindset" in her video, The power of believing that you can improve . I thought it was interesting that she gave a group of ten-year-old students a test that was more difficult than an average test for that age group. She defined those who enjoyed the challenge had a "Growth Mindset" and described the other kids, who felt defeated and gave up, had a "Fixed Mindset." The students who had a "Growth Mindset" did well on the test, but the kids with a "Fixed Mindset" failed.  She mentioned a high school in Chicago that replaced giving students a "Failing" grade with giving them a "Not Yet" (NYET) grade. She claimed that giving kids a NYET grade gave the student's confidence and they started to score better on their exams.  I get frustrated when I get a crappy grade on an assignment, paper, or exam. As a kid, I remember recei

Introduction

Hello,  My name is Madison, but I also go by Madi. I am studying Criminology at the University of Oklahoma and I am on track to graduate in May 2019. I took twenty hours during the last spring semester and I am happy to share that I got all A's. One of the most interesting classes I have had for my major is an internship over this last summer. I interned at Mabel Basset Correctional Center, a women's prison in McLoud, Oklahoma. As awesome as that sounds, it was also very mentally and emotionally draining. Sometimes, I like to think that I would enjoy working as a Case Manager there, but I also believe it would wear me and my family down because there is never a dull moment and there are times when it can get pretty hostile. On a lighter note, I live in Norman with my three cats: Todd, Tater-Tot, and Poe.  I work at the Law Office of Paula K. Sullivan as an assistant. This job is great because I am thinking about going to law school after I graduate if I do not go for a Ma

Storybook Favorites

The first storybook that I came across was  Italian Fairy Tales . The topic of fairy tales is familiar. I used to have the Brothers Grimm stories book until a dog ate it. I was unaware of any of the Italian fairy tales. The title did a great job of informing me about what the storybook is about. The introduction did a great job of explaining what the storybook entailed. I appreciate that the creator gave definitions at the beginning of the introduction. The writer did a great job developing the topic and catching my attention right from the get-go! I have always enjoyed fairy tales, so that is why I was initially drawn to this storybook. The overall design of the pages is simplistic, which I believe is preferable when trying to navigate through a story. I also liked the color scheme, it is easy on the eyes, and I reminded me of reading from an actual book. The writer also used the author's notes, which was nice to see at the end of each page. The author's notes helped tie her f
