Reading Notes: West African Folktales_Part B

For the second half of Barker's West African Folktales, I wanted to try to stick with one note-taking strategy because I usually just write whatever comes to mind, which is sort of a mix of note-taking strategies.

The strategy that I would like to focus on is Hollywood casting. Until now, I have not used this strategy before, but there is a first for everything!

The story Farmer Mybrow and the Fairies seemed the easiest to start off with. So, with that, the first character is Farmer Mybrow. I could picture Samuel L. Jackson to play as the farmer from this story. I chose Jackson not only because he is one of my favorite Hollywood actors, but because some of the roles that he has played in movies seem, to me, to be similar to how I imagine Farmer Mybrow. Samuel L. Jackson is a strong actor that I believe would bring out the best in Farmer Mybrow, i.e., Jackson has an astonishing ability to portray emotions and I can imagine that Farmer Mybrow was flooded with emotion after figuring out that his crop, that he worked so hard on, was ruined.

The next character is Farmer Mybrow's wife. This character seems ditsy, but kindhearted and means well. The Hollywood actor that I would like to see play this character would be Viola Davis. I think Ms. Davis would be a good fit because of her ability to play into her, as well as the character's, emotions well. I am also referring to her prior roles in the T.V. show, How to Get Away with Murder, and the movie, The Help. I also think that the age pairing between her and Mr. Jackson would work well. Also, I think her stature suits how I would imagine a farmer's wife, built with muscle, but still dainty.

The last character(s) are the fairies. Now I am not sure if there is a king/queen fairy, but I guess that I where I can let my imagination run. I think it would be interesting to have the fairies be the same person, i.e., the same actor/actress' face. I think that ZoĆ« Saldana would be a perfect fit for the embodiment of the fairies. Ms. Saldana is a strong female actress who is sassy and also has a petite figure, which suits how I imagine a fairy (I am assuming these fairies are not like the fairy godmother or something, I imagine them small like pixies or Tinkerbell). I like her ability to kick-ass in her movies, so I think her spunky attitude suits how I think a fairy's personality should be.
